AUSOM Discusses MCAT Scores for medical schools & average med school GPA

Avalon University School of Medicine has been hard at work building connections with US based universities. We want to make sure US students are aware of all of their options for a medical education. Recently, we have begun connecting with colleges and universities near our Administrative Office in Ohio. We strive to educate students and discuss admission requirements such as MCAT scores for medical schools or even average med school GPA.

Director of Admissions, Mr. Thomas Morrow, and Admissions Specialist, Mrs. Tara Santiago recently held a presentation at Youngstown State University. Students were informed of Avalon’s programs, tuition, and the benefits of attending a fully accredited Caribbean medical school. Mr. Morrow also answered questions focusing on average med school GPA and admissions requirements including MCAT scores for medical schools.

Rather than focusing on average med school GPA, Avalon has developed two tracks for our MD Program. Students applying for Avalon’s MD Program can be placed in either track depending on GPA or MCAT score, if applicable. We believe that instituting the Regular MD Program and Accelerated MD Program provides students a better educational foundation.

Requirements of MCAT scores for medical schools can vary. The MCAT is not required by Avalon at this time, however, students who score 500+ are eligible for the Accelerated MD Program. Avalon’s Admissions Committee also considers personal statements, letters of recommendation, and transcripts when determining acceptance and program placement. We have found that taking a holistic approach to the admissions process benefits both the student and our University.

There are a variety of factors one may consider when applying to medical school. While pondering average med school GPA is common, it is important to not get too hung up on this. We encourage students to identify their own strengths and driving factors for pursuing a medical education. This individualized focus, rather than comparing to the average, builds confident students and successful doctors.
