We are pleased to introduce David L. Stuart, MD, our newest clinical department chair. On July 1, 2022, Dr. Stuart assumed the role of Surgery Department Chair. In addition, he is a Clinical Professor of Surgery at Avalon and is one of the most distinguished teachers on Avalon University School of Medicine’s extensive clinical teaching roster.

Dr. Stuart has been an attending physician in general surgery for the past 15 years at Beckley Appalachian Regional Healthcare in Beckley, West Virginia. He began his career in Beckley shortly after completing his general surgery residency at Marshall University School of Medicine in Huntington, West Virginia. During his career in Beckley, Dr. Stuart has been Chair of the Department of Surgery for the past 5 years; and since 2021, he has also served on the Council of the West Virginia College of Surgeons.

In the field of medicine, Dr. Stuart has won many research and scholarly awards. In addition, he has posted numerous publications and presentations. Prior to entering medical school at Howard University College of Medicine, he won an All-American Scholar Award and several championships for his athleticism, especially in the Triple Jump.

We are grateful that Dr. Stuart has taken on the challenges associated with being the chairperson of one of the core clinical departments at Avalon. He is a team player, a distinguished surgeon, and a respected member of the family of medicine. We look forward to a long and enduring relationship between Dr. David L. Stuart and Avalon University School of Medicine.
