It is an exciting time to be a medical school on the island of Curaçao!

On June 20,2023, Curaçao’s news outlet, Curaçao Chronicle, issued a press release notifying readers that the government of Curaçao recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and Other Health Professions (CAAM-HP). CAAM-HP, as an authorized accrediting body, separates an accredited Caribbean medical school from a non-accredited Caribbean medical school. Furthermore, accreditation verifies a medical school has been intensely evaluated and has been found to operate at the highest level of industry standards.

The signing of this agreement allows CAAM-HP to act as the accreditation authority for international universities established on the island of Curaçao. The signing took place at the campus of accredited Caribbean medical school, Avalon University School of Medicine, and was attended by Curaçao’s Minister of Education, Sciences, Culture, and Sports and the Interim Minister of Public Health, Environment, and Nature, Avalon University School of Medicine’s Board members and dignitaries, Curaçao’s Secretary General of MSEKD and the Inspector – General of Public Health.

Avalon University School of Medicine is truly humbled by the opportunity to act as host to these influential government officials for such an important event. Our faculty and administration are proud to have developed professional relationships with such prominent individuals.

This event took place in conjunction with CAAM-HP’s visit to Avalon University School of Medicine. Avalon University School of Medicine was the first of the nearly 80 active Caribbean medical schools to be accredited by more than one accrediting body. This visit was completed in accordance with CAAM-HP’s standards for a Caribbean medical school to maintain their accreditation status.
