Why Accreditation Matters to You as a Student in a Caribbean Medical School

Congratulations! If you are reading this, that means that you are considering starting at or transferring to one of the premier medical schools located in the Caribbean, Avalon University School of Medicine.

Caribbean medical schools are a wonderful option for those individuals who are looking for a unique, affordable, state-of-the-art education in medicine. However, it is important to recognize that not all Caribbean schools are the same and that some options stand out compared to others. Currently, there are approximately 80 Caribbean medical schools, and it is imperative that you ask yourself this very important question: “How do I know which one is the best?”

One of the aspects that set some Caribbean medical schools, like Avalon University, apart from others is the institution’s accreditation status. If your goal is to become a practicing physician in North America, the accreditation status of the medical school you select is one of the most important considerations you can make!
The university’s accreditation makes it clear to current students, prospective students, and residency directors that the school has been intensely evaluated. This means that a recognized accrediting body has visited the school and looked deeply into how the school functions and examines all aspects of the medical education program. By the year 2024, Caribbean medical schools must be accredited by an accrediting body that is recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME)*. When a school becomes accredited, it means that the institution is operating at the highest levels of industry standards. Additionally, accreditation by a recognized body will allow the institution’s medical graduates to go back to North America to become practicing physicians.
Avalon University was the first Caribbean medical school to receive accreditation from two different recognized accrediting bodies – Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM) and Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM- HP)

The graph below shows the current list of accredited Caribbean medical schools and the maximum number of years that those accreditations are valid.
