Studying Medicine Where the Ocean Meets Ambition: My Insider Look at Life in Curaçao
Traveling to Curaçao was an unforgettable experience that gave me a better understanding and appreciation for both island life and the academic environment that Avalon University School of medicine offers to students.
From the moment I arrived at the island, it was easy to see why Curaçao is such a special place to study. The island offers a rare balance—strong academic focus paired with a vibrant, tropical setting. The warm weather, breathtaking views, and welcoming atmosphere create an environment that feels both motivating and refreshing.

Walking through the halls of campus at Avalon University School of Medicine, I was able to experience the daily rhythm of student life. The halls were filled with students heading to and from class, gathering outside in small groups, and actively engaged in the classroom. There was a clear sense of focus and determination surrounding me.
I explored the spaces where students study and take their exams. It was inspiring to witness what campus life is really like. The study environments felt structured yet supportive; spaces designed to encourage collaboration and concentrate.

I also had the opportunity to experience Avalon’s student housing. The convenience of living so close to campus creates an ideal setup for academic success. Everything students need is within reach, allowing them to stay focused while still enjoying their surroundings.
One of the most meaningful aspects of my experience was seeing the sense of community. Living near classmates fosters connection, support, and friendships that become an important part of the journey as a medical student. It’s more than just housing—it’s a shared experience

One of the highlights of my trip was experiencing the food in Curaçao. The island offers a wide variety of options, from local Caribbean dishes to familiar favorites that you can get from home. Whether grabbing something quick between commitments or sitting down for a relaxing meal, there is truly something for everyone.
Fresh seafood is a standout, and many dishes incorporate bold island flavors and spices. Local spots offer authentic meals that reflect the culture and history of the island, while other restaurants provide comfort foods students may miss from home. Supermarkets are also well stocked with local and similar brands that may be familiar to you; making it easy for students to cook meals that fit their preferences and routines.
Avalon University offers transportation for students to supermarkets near campus to shop for groceries, so they never run out of their favorite snack or meal to make.
The combination of fresh ingredients, diverse options, and waterfront dining makes the food experience in Curaçao both convenient and enjoyable.
Some spots that I recommend are: The Grill King – Family Steakhouse and Grill, Gio’s Gelateria & Caffe`, Pizza Mia, and De Visserij piscadera.

Curaçao itself is breathtaking.
I visited Mambo Beach, and it truly lives up to the hype. The crystal-clear water and soft sand make it the perfect place to unwind. It can get busy, so arriving early is a great idea. The nearby outdoor shopping area and restaurants make it easy to grab a bite to eat and spend the afternoon soaking up the sunshine. Sitting on the beach swings with the ocean in front of you is a moment you won’t forget!
Parasasa Beach, located right across from campus and student housing, which offers even more convenience. Students can walk across the street and can go study or catch a sunset after a long day of classes. Parasasa Beach provides the perfect reminder of balance: study hard, then take time to recharge.
