Tips and Tricks to Prepare for Medical School
It is almost time to take one of the most important steps in your life. You have been dreaming of becoming a doctor since you were asked the question “what do you want to be when you grow up?”. You have worked hard and have dedicated yourself to pursuing a medical education. This is an exciting time in your life, and now it is time to prepare for medical school.
We asked the Admissions Department and Bursar’s Office at Avalon University School of Medicine to provide some tips on how a future medical student can prepare to enter medical school.
Admissions Department:
1. Pursue extracurricular experience in the medical field:
Admissions Committees love to see your passion for medicine shine. By pursuing extracurricular experiences in the medical field, you are setting yourself up for success in your coursework and in your clinical rotations.
Hannah Westover, Sr. Admissions Specialist2. Obtain letters of recommendation from current or recent teachers/professors: It is imperative that you keep updated letters of recommendation on file. These letters should not be more than 1 year old.

4. Do your research to find the best accredited medical school for you:
Attending an accredited or non-accredited medical school can greatly impact how you may use your degree in the future, so it is important to do your research and find the best school that will help set you up for success.

1. Communicate:
If you are having monetary struggles or delays in payment, let the Bursar know as soon as possible. We can provide you assistance such as loans or payment plans which can help decrease the stress that comes with paying for school.
Hannah Yoder, Bursar2. Learn how to manage a budget: This skill is not only a crucial life skill but will also help relieve unnecessary stress as you work through your medical education.
3. Inform yourself about the finances associated with pursuing a medical education: In addition to the standard costs associated with pursuing higher education, medical students should be aware of any additional fees/costs associated with the program.
This is such an exciting time in your life and although all the above are important tips and tricks to have at your disposal, the most important tip is do not be afraid to ask questions.
