As a teacher, Dr. Tarig considers the learning environment to be the setting for his teaching. He plans his instruction in a way that makes sure all students are able to comprehend by using different teaching practices, such as lecture, hands-on activities, cooperative learning groups and plenty of small groups and individual practice. He creates a positive learning environment in his classes; for example, he addresses students by name, and uses “please” and “thank you” during his classes. He says he also makes it a point to listen to each and every student.
Dr. Tarig believes the influence of the learning environment on student success makes sense to his students and he feels they would do better when they learn in a positive environment. A positive learning environment to him means that a student feels comfortable and has a good rapport with their teacher and peers. His principle as a teacher is to serve as the prime mover of the educational wheel and his students are the key participants in the learning process. That being said, the core knowledge will be engaging to his students and make them more effective and creative. In this way, he feels that he has developed an effective learning environment.
He started this method of teaching with the Standardized Patients in which they were required to have a proper dress code during lab and was expected to present a professional appearance at all times. Because of this learning environment, he felt that he created a safe learning environment. Expectations are made clear, his requests are kept simple, direct, and specific. He helps students correct their behaviors, and he uses one-on-one feedback.
