Teaching is an enjoyable and rewarding profession and imparting knowledge needs to be practical, dynamic, and inclusive.
The best time of my academic life is the time I spend teaching my students! Teaching Pathology became part of my life since 2006 as in India all Post Graduate Students must work as a tutor at practical classes. I taught Pathology as a PG tutor even before I joined as Faculty.
In my 10 years of teaching Pathology, everytime I explain a concept of pathogenesis I realize it remains with me and helps me to simplify it further when I explain the same once more. I believe; to teach well, one must continue to learn. Learning to teach & teaching to learn keeps me busy to become that perfect and effective teacher I always wanted when I was a student myself.
“One of the great appeals of a career in pathology is that it offers the opportunity to teach at many levels. No other medical specialty offers as many different opportunities in education.” (Intersociety Council for Pathology Information. The pathologist as a teacher. Available at: http://www.asip.org/career/pathologistteacher.htm.)
My aim is to encourage students to participate in all teaching sessions. The class I conduct will not only explain various diseases from a pathological point of view but also gives the student experience of seeing the fantastic world of a pathologist in practice and how a diagnosis can be given just by looking at gross specimens or microscopic slides. I find creative ways to engage students–and myself–in the Department Of Pathology at Avalon University School of Medicine to teach & learn Pathology.
