Student Life at Avalon Shines at Local Health Fair in Beckley, WV
Beckley, West Virginia, came alive with community spirit on October 4, 2023, as the Coalfields Community Health Fair took center stage at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center. This health fair was a showcase of wellness services and a testament to the active role that medical students can play in promoting community health. Avalon University School of Medicine is so proud of our students Leah Merrick, Zainab Khan, and Leela Duraimurugan for their participation in the fair and the passion they show in their academic endeavors.
The event featured an impressive lineup of over 70 different vendors who worked together to provide invaluable health services to attendees. This health fair was a one-stop destination for all things health and well-being. Stations included blood pressure checks, cancer screenings, and instruction on the life-saving techniques of CPR.
Tammy Hall-Richardson, the Director of Case Management for Raleigh General Hospital, accentuated the significance of community outreach, especially in regions with a rural health population. She recognized the reluctance often associated with asking for help, and the importance of these health fairs to bridge the gap, turning pride into proactive engagement.

During last spring’s health fair, approximately 500 visitors attended. This year, the organizers, students, and community members aimed to surpass that number, ensuring even more individuals can benefit from the resources and knowledge shared at the fair.
This involvement emphasizes the significance of student life at Avalon, where future healthcare professionals actively engage with their communities, applying their knowledge and skills to promote well-being. For students like Leah Merrick, Zainab Khan, and Leela Duraimurugan, it’s not just about giving back to the community; it’s a learning experience that will shape their careers.
The Coalfields Community Health Fair, made possible by community coalitions and enthusiastic students like Leah, Zainab, and Leela, stands as a shining example of the positive impact that dedicated individuals and institutions can have on community health and wellness. It serves as a reminder that the spirit of student life at Avalon extends beyond the classroom and into the heart of the community.
