Avalon University Raises Awareness for Breast Cancer
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Avalon University is committed to raising awareness about this devastating disease. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, affecting an estimated 1 in 8 women in their lifetime. While breast cancer is also diagnosed in men, it is much less common.
Early detection is key to successful treatment of breast cancer; regular mammograms and clinical breast exams are highly encouraged. Mammograms are X-ray images of the breast that can detect cancer before it can be felt. Clinical breast exams are physical exams of the breast performed by a healthcare professional.
In addition to early detection, there are a number of other steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. These include maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, and limiting alcohol consumption.
How to Support Breast Cancer Awareness Month:
There are many ways to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month, both at home and while you’re out and about.
- Attend events that aim to raise awareness, such as a Breast Cancer Educational Seminar or a Breast Cancer Awareness Walk/Marathon
- Race for the Cure hosts races and walks across the continental U.S.
- Donate to breast cancer research or support services
- Wear pink to show your support
- Volunteer with organizations that aim to raise awareness for breast cancer and support patients currently going through treatment
You can also support Breast Cancer Awareness Month by learning more about the disease and sharing what you know with others. The more people who are aware of breast cancer, the earlier it can be detected and treated, and the more lives can be saved.
We, here at Avalon University, believe that education is key to preventing breast cancer. We strongly encourage all to seek out educational resources on breast cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. One small step by one individual can make a world of difference to another and help to save a life.
