A Student’s Perspective: What it’s like to Study Medicine Abroad as a Canadian Student
Avalon University School of Medicine is home to a diverse student body. As a student coming from Canada, you may be wondering how you will fit into the world of international medical school. To help you out Avalon has asked our Canadian students to share the information that they have found helpful as they presented their medical studies abroad.
Muhammad Sadiq Ali, MD1:
My experience with admissions was extremely smooth! Everything that was needed from me was made clear and summarized in a way that made it easy to follow.
The most important thing I learned from the whole admission process up to arriving and starting medical school was the fact that communication is vital! There are so many steps to take that it might seem overwhelming and impossible to do it by yourself.
Avalon’s admission team is one of the best when it comes to helping students. I always felt like I was annoying with all my questions, but every single time they answered with happiness. There were even times when the team reached out to me to give me an alternative solution to a financial situation I was facing. If you don’t ask, no one can help you! Unlike other Universities, there isn’t a 7-business day email response time or a 3-hour call hold time, so help is closer than you think!
I found it helpful to start the immigration document process right away! The longest and most challenging part is getting the birth certificate legalized by the Canadian and the Dutch embassy. Everything else could be done quickly!
The cost is affordable, and the accreditation allows you to practice in Canada, the United States, and other countries! Thankfully the tuition is extremely fair, but I, as well as other Canadians, noticed Canadian government aid will not fully cover the costs of tuition, fees, and living expenses. A private loan or taking money out of savings may be necessary to fully cover your expenses!
I appreciate the school taking the time to teach the students about the ECFMG process and the residency process coming from a medical school abroad. Not many schools are THIS invested in quality assurance and making sure everyone will be successful.
The education itself is very high quality! From day 1 the focus is on the USMLE, NBMEs, getting into residency, and most importantly treating patients with empathy and respect! Clinical experience, access to Lecturio videos, and small class sizes allow for tailored education to pinpoint struggles and allow you to excel. At Avalon empathy, education, and success are what the curriculum is all about. Learning what you need to know for patient care and the boards, while focusing on application rather than memorization is what I truly appreciate about the curriculum!
My time on the island has been wonderful. I was extremely nervous before landing, but as soon as I arrived at the airport, I was picked up with welcoming hands and dropped off at the dorms.
I noticed that there were people from all over the world including Canada, the United States, Nigeria, India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, etc… There is a community for everyone! All these countries, of course, mean many different cultures and ideas. The most important thing is everyone respects one another, and I have had no problem fitting in here whether it be with fellow Canadians or from any of the wonderfully diverse groups of students.
Avalon University is quite honestly one of the best choices for a Canadian student.
