Women’s History Month: Introducing Avalon’s Dean of Basic Sciences
It’s been over a decade since Dr.Bala joined Avalon University School of Medicine as a faculty member of Basic Sciences. Over the years, Dr. Bala has had the opportunity to serve in multiple administrative positions including Dean of Academics, Admissions Committee Chair, and Associate Dean of Basic Sciences. Dr. Bala presently serves as Avalon’s Dean of Basic Sciences, Professor of Pharmacology, and Chair of the DIT Department.
Educational Background:
Dr. Bala began her academic journey with the completion of her MBBS degree from Guntur Medical College. She then went on to pursue her Masters and PhD in Public Health, which gave her a broad understanding of the health needs and challenges facing communities worldwide. Additionally, Dr. Bala earned a Master of Science in Pharmacology & Toxicology from Michigan State University, providing her with a more specialized knowledge of drug therapies and their effects on the human body.
Her educational background in public health and pharmacology has provided her with in-depth knowledge of the fields, and she is working to implement new teaching methodologies and technologies that will help students learn more effectively to prepare them for the challenges of modern healthcare.
Professional Accomplishments:
As a physician, Dr. Bala has achieved ECFMG certification, a testament to her knowledge and skills in Medicine. However, her accomplishments don’t stop there. She has been honored with four medical education fellowships, allowing her to expand her knowledge and experience further.
Her expertise in public health and pharmacology has also enabled her to publish around 70 research articles as co-author in peer-reviewed journals, which have contributed to advancement in medical knowledge and understanding.
Current Responsibilities:
As well as being an active member of Avalon’s Admissions Committee, in her current role as Avalon’s Dean of Basic Sciences, Dr. Bala plays a crucial role in overseeing the basic science curriculum (including all pre-clinical courses) and ensuring that it meets the required standards. She supports the Dean of the School of Medicine in ensuring that the University’s programs meet the highest quality standards and are recognized by relevant accreditation bodies.
As an integral part of Avalon’s growth and development, Dr. Bala has witnessed the University’s progress from its early days to its current status as a thriving Medical University. She is focused on maintaining Avalon’s academic standards while staying up to date with the latest developments in medical education. Her experience and expertise make her a valuable asset to the University and the medical community.
Dr. Bala is deeply committed to the mission of medical education, and the transformative power of education to change lives and communities. She believes that access to high-quality education is a fundamental right, and that it is the responsibility of all of us who work in higher education to ensure that our medical programs are accessible, affordable, and equitable for all students.
