On the way to achieving one of our core educational goals to prepare students for all aspects of medical practice, Avalon University School of Medicine has introduced a new elective course – Basic Surgical Skills. This is a unique opportunity for those students who are enthusiastic and passionate about developing strong practical skills on their path to excellence.
The course aims to teach basic science students the essential manual skills for working with surgical instruments and materials, which can be an important foundation for further effective clinical training and practice.
The course is focused on acquiring skills such as tying surgical knots as well as performing simple surgical manipulations, such as incision and suturing of tissues, primary surgical treatment of wounds, and mastering basic techniques of suturing different types of tissues, and the principles of laparoscopic techniques. This course is applied with the use of modern surgical simulators, as well as biological materials. Successful completion of the course will help students master the program more effectively during surgical clinical rotations and benefit those applying for a surgical residency.
