Dr. Praveen Kottath Veetil

Ph.D. (Physiology), FAcadMEd, FIAMSE
Associate Dean of Student Affairs

Dr. Praveen started his teaching career in 2002 soon after he obtained his Master’s Degree in Physiology. While pursuing his PhD he got the opportunity to work in advanced research labs in India and Canada. Initially, he taught in India, China, and the Middle East.

In the Middle East, he was introduced to the complete problem-based learning (PBL) curriculum for the first time. This enabled him to learn different types of curriculum.

Currently, he is working as an Associate Professor of Physiology and Chair of Curriculum Committee in Avalon University School of Medicine, Curacao, where he is exposed to the progressive medical education strategies.

In his career, he is currently concentrating on individualized education for each student. He uses “flipped classroom” strategy for the fast-paced medical education in the Caribbean. Dr. Praveen’s previous experiences with PBL helped him to start a video-based triggered model of PBL, and the evaluations from the students are very positive.

His interest in medical education allowed the management of Avalon University School of Medicine to award two scholarships for pursuing courses in medical education. He did his online course in Essential skills in medical education and another course on Leadership in Medical Education conducted by AMEE helping him to chair the Human Structure and Function department and to chair the Curriculum Committee. He also received the FAcadMed – Fellowship from the Academy of Medical Educators (AoME) in UK. His philosophy is to individualize the teaching and learning according to individual student needs that match with the institutional outcome.
